I haven't written anything here for awhile because nothing has drawn me back until now. Today I finally came home to Reading Practice because what I needed to write about doesn't belong on my main blog, Laughing at Life 2. What I need to write about today is personal and hard and that kind of personal material belongs here at Reading Practice. I would have been back sooner I just haven't had anything personal that I needed to say. That is of course, until today.

My best friend died today. He was struck and killed by a Dish Network van at approximately 8am right out in front of my home. The driver of the Dish Network van did not even tap his brakes, just killed my friend and continued on with his day paying no attention to me or my feline companion that he had just killed and taken from my family's life. It was devastating seeing him lying dead in the street like that and I will never forget the sight of his motionless body lying there for as long as I live. It was horrible.

I don't want to remember him like that. That wasn't what he was. He was so much more than that lifeless corpse lying there on the pavement. It didn't even look like him. It looked like a cheaply made Hollywood prop, not my friend that I had raised from a newborn kitten and loved more than I have the words to even express. It still doesn't seem real to me but it is real. He is gone now and all I have left of him is his memory.

Thank you Petra for being the best damn cat that has ever lived. I love you buddy and I am going to miss you more than I have the talent to say. I hope wherever you are that you are happy and at peace. You will be missed so much boy, not just by me but by our whole family of which you were a huge and irreplaceable part. We love you Petra, be happy buddy, know you were loved and be free.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"> Women, the fairer sex.
I love women, really I do, who doesn't? Women are great. Every single one offering her own grace and beauty to the world every day. Just looking at them from across a room can soothe you. And I love the way their voices sound. Get too close to a woman and they can get intoxicating. So inviting, soft, and warm. If you love her she's your home and that special one fills your heart up completely with love, and purpose and she just swells up your heart with pride that she is yours. She can make you feel important, special. Her love for you validates your soul.
Women truly are amazing. I love each and every one. I always have loved women.
So love your women and enjoy them but be careful watch your backs because they'll wait until your guards are all the way down and all at once they'll viciously attack until there is nothing left of you but pain.

The Zeitgeist film trilogy consists of three powerful documentaries that point out the problems, and restraints of our current monetary system, and shows the need to move to a more humane, and logical resource based economy. It exposes the damage our money driven economy has done to our world, and it's people. Pointing out undeniably how greed, and corruption has ruined our planet, and distorted our views about the difference between right and wrong.
These films go further than showing us what has gone wrong with humanity though. They offer a solution for how to fix our world in a way that takes care of everyone, not just the elite, or the privileged. Using the 'Venus Project' these films show us how a resource based economy would not only repair the damage done to our planet, but also end the starvation and suffering caused by the greed behind our current monetary system.
These films offer hope that if we were to rise up as one things could still be set right in the world. They show us that the petty differences between us are insignificant and programed in us to keep us from doing just that. They show us that if we worked together we could turn our world in to a much better place. This is a message that needs to be spread to more and more people until the vision laid out in these films becomes the reality of our future.

In this classic 1974 Mel Brooks film the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein leaves the castle he conducted his experiments to his grandson Fredrick. Even though Fredrick never believes in his grandfathers experiments, his mind gets changed when he arrives and reads his grandfather's notes and realizes they just might work. Then with the help of Igor's grandson, Igor, he successfully reanimates a body which escapes the castle and creates havoc.
This film is a classic for a simple reason, it's hilarious. The cast, led by Gene Wilder, do a terrific job of bringing Mel Brooks vision to life on the screen. If you have never treated yourself to a viewing of this film, do yourself a favor and watch it. You won't be disappointed.

In this 1993 film Johnny Depp plays Gilbert Grape, a young man growing up in a small town that is caring for his morbidly obese mother, and autistic brother Arnie, played masterfully by Leonardo DiCaprio. Gilbert had given up on his future and embraced his role as caretaker to his family after his father commits suicide. They never talk about their father in front Arnie in fear of his reaction. All of this starts to change when Gilbert meets a girl named Becky, played by Juliet Lewis, who is passing through and gets stranded when their truck breaks down.
This movie is a very heartwarming film that will stay with you forever. Superbly written, directed, and performed by it's cast, What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a tremendous classic movie that should not be missed. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and seek it out. You will be glad you did.
Bush. I think we all know how that all turned out now don't we? I haven't voted again since because I just don't believe that we are really in charge of the outcome at all. I think voting is just a way of making us feel like we are deciding something that is really out of our hands all together. I know that that is a cynical view but, I feel there isn't enough cynicism today which has allowed a corrupt government system to run wild.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05646511815728140305noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311193336852923058.post-53114313763489270942013-04-24T12:45:00.002-05:002013-04-24T12:45:47.525-05:00Under The Dome

Under The Dome is a science fiction novel by Author Stephen King that tackles the subject of how people would behave when cut off from the society they are used to. A strange impenetrable, invisible dome cuts off the small town of Chester's Mill from the rest of the world, and the towns inhabitants are left to fend for themselves. The result is a fascinating human drama you don't want to miss.
This novel is also being made in to a television event by CBS. Starting June 24th a thirteen episode adaptation of King's novel will air each Monday. I have included the first look trailer for the show below.

The Shield was a crime drama television show that ran on the FX network for seven seasons. It centered around Detective Vic Mackey and the unit of Detectives that he ran called The Strike Team. The Strike Team dealt with the worst of the criminal element like the gangs, and the drug dealers, and they were good at dealing with that element because they were the worst of the police force.
Mackey and his unit brought a whole new meaning to bad cops, and their adventures, and breakdowns were fascinating to watch. I was really sad to see this show come to an end because I could never get enough of it. I loved this show, and I miss it, even though I own it on DVD. If you love drama, crime shows, and dirty cops check this show out. You will love it.

I still enjoy doing it, but I am growing frustrated with it because I have got to a point where I want to start making money from my writing, but I have no idea how. I figured that since I am in the A to Z challenge currently that maybe now would be a good time to ask for advice. If you know of steps that I could take to become a professional writer please share them with me. I would greatly appreciate it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05646511815728140305noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311193336852923058.post-53734206137365428172013-04-20T17:13:00.000-05:002013-04-20T17:13:10.194-05:00Rocky

The 'Rocky' series of films are among some of my favorite movies of all time. There are six films total in the series, Rocky 1 - 5, and Rocky Balboa. All of the films center around Rocky Balboa, a small time boxer who is given a shot at the title but, they are really so much more than that. They also tell a beautiful love story of Rocky and his wife Adrian, they have great stories of deep friendships, and ultimately they all show you the importance of love, and that with enough heart, desire, and will anything is possible in life. These movies always inspire me, and make me feel good any time I watch them.

Pulp Fiction is a film that is difficult to explain and impossible to forget. It tells the tales of two hit men, the mob boss they work for, his wife, an aging boxer, and two petty criminals, and intertwines them all beautifully together. The writing, and direction from Quentin Tarantino is masterful, and timeless. This 1994 film still feels fresh and groundbreaking to this day. No matter how many times I've seen this film, which is many, it always pulls me in, and feels fresh. I highly recommend this movie. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05646511815728140305noreply@blogger.com32tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311193336852923058.post-30919590433664336132013-04-17T00:00:00.000-05:002013-04-17T00:00:09.717-05:00Ordinary

A new shop called 'Needful Things' is opened up in the small town of Castle Rock by Leland Gaunt. His store is stocked with the perfect item for any customer that walks through his door for a deceivingly low price. The only catch is for paying so low you are required to do a deed for Mr. Gaunt, and these deeds are designed to turn everyone in the town against each other.
I could not put this book down, I loved it. The story, descriptions, and human drama will have you enthralled in this richly detailed tale. Needful Things is a great novel that I would recommend to anyone, Stephen King fan or not.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05646511815728140305noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311193336852923058.post-62545383997986648672013-04-15T00:00:00.000-05:002013-04-15T16:08:57.883-05:00Misery - Book Review

Misery was not only the first Stephen King novel I read, it was also the first novel I ever read. I was grounded to my room, so I went to my High Schools library and found this gem on the paperback rack. I was instantly hooked and became a King fan for life.
The story of Misery revolves around the character, novelist Paul Sheldon. Paul writes romance novels centering around the character Misery Chastain but, he wants to write novels of more substance and is delivering his final novel in the Misery Chastain series to his publisher in which he kills off his character, freeing him to pursue other interests.
On the way, however, he has a terrible car accident and is rescued by his number one fan, Annie Wilkes, who nurses Paul back to health at her home. But, when Annie finds Paul's latest manuscript, and discovers Paul's plans to kill off her favorite character, she demands he writes a new book that brings her beloved Misery back to life.
This novel is, in my opinion, a masterpiece of psychological horror, and a classic. Stephen King brings the characters of Paul and Annie to life in a way that has you reading at a frantic pace, captivated by the drama, and the horrors that Paul experiences while under Annie's care. I could not put this book down, and have re-read it many times. It is a great novel that everyone should read at least once.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05646511815728140305noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311193336852923058.post-17858039438172374932013-04-13T00:00:00.000-05:002013-04-13T00:00:01.008-05:00Lies, Sex, Misery, and Lawyers

Dating SUCKED!!! I hated it. I was awful at it, which in hindsight is probably the biggest reason why I hated it, bottom line it was just a miserable experience for me, and one I never want to endure again. Although being married didn't go well for me the first time either. It ended in a courtroom, but honestly, when you have kids involved, it never really does actually end. But, despite that awful experience, I am married again. Why you ask? Good question. I met my soul mate, that's why. I hope things stay the way they are right now for the rest of our lives.

The 'Kill Bill' films tell the tale of 'The Bride', A.K.A. 'Black Mamba' as she gets her revenge on 'Bill' and his group of assassins, that she was once a part of, who gunned down her wedding rehearsal killing everyone inside the church but her, who they thought they had killed as well. 'The Bride' had survived the massacre but, was in a coma, and when she wakes up she vows to take her revenge on The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad and their leader, her former lover, 'Bill'.
This two part movie is filled with action and suspense. Even though the plot is hokey, Quentin Tarantino manages to craft films that have you completely absorbed in the drama that unfolds. The writing, like in all Tarantino's work, is flawless and engaging, and the ensemble cast delivers electric performances throughout. These movies are not to be missed.

Jackie Brown is the 1997 film by Quentin Tarantino adapted from the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard. The film tells the tale of flight attendant Jackie Brown who gets caught smuggling gun money for her boss on a flight by the feds. The agents who catch her want her to turn on her boss which puts Jackie in a risky situation. Should she gamble with her life at a chance for her freedom, or just do the time and not risk it. Jackie meets Max Cherry, her bondsman, who gives her hope, and a better plan than going with the feds.

I really enjoyed this film, one of the more underated by Tarantino, which is why I chose to discuss it here today. I don't want to give any spoilers so I won't delve much more into the story but, the writing, and direction, plus the great acting by this star-studded ensemble cast make Jackie Brown well worth checking out if you haven't seen it. For more info on this film, I've included the trailer for the movie below.

sat outside the Hospital entrance on the steel bench by the ashtray that passed
for a smoking area, studying a white envelope that he held in his hand. There was only one word written on the outside. She had simply written ‘Charlie’ there on the front
and for now all he could bring himself to do was just stare at his name written there in her cursive. He just sat on
that cold steel bench while he traced and re-traced his name with his eyes and
tried to let it settle in that the time had come to read it. Until then, he just couldn’t open it, not yet.

Sarah
had found out last November about the cancer.
Unfortunately though, they had found the tumors far too late to fight the
disease. The cancer that was attacking her body had already progressed too much
to fight, but Charlie had still found the best Doctors in the country, and
although every specialist was honest of her chances, they all fought it hard at first. Three months ago though, no one else would fight
anymore no matter how much money Charlie would pay because it was over. Now all they could do was treat her pain.

Sarah took this news in
that final specialist’s office without a single tear, and when they got home
that night she sat down and wrote Charlie a letter. She gave the letter to him later that night
and she told him the rules of the letter.
There were only three. The first
was that it was only to be opened if and when the time ever came for Charlie to
decide her fate because she couldn’t.
The second rule was to carry it always so he would always have it with
him when he needed it, and the third rule was the one that would no doubt end up
being the hardest. She made him swear
aloud to her that one before she would even hand it him.
She made him swear that no matter what the
letter said he would respect it and remember that even if he couldn’t agree
with it, what was in that letter were her wishes and they were what she wanted. He swore, she gave it to him and that was the
end of it. It was as close to talking
about the details of her coming death that they ever came. Even when her dying was accepted, and only a
matter of time, neither of them wanted to focus on it much.

Charlie swore to her
that he would honor all of her rules and she gave him her letter. After that he had put it in his pocket and even
though he had carried it with him every day like he said he would, neither of
them mentioned it again. With that
little piece of business done they had just cuddled there together on the couch
in front of the fire. They spent the
rest of that night together on the little couch in front of the fire laughing
and kissing each other until finally they ended up on the floor and they had
made love there on the floor in front of the fireplace before falling asleep in
each others arms.

all been that way. They loved very hard
those last months. They spent all of
their remaining time together visiting family, and friends, and they even went on
a cruise before she got too sick to travel but, mostly they laid naked in bed
and just held each other. They kissed a lot,
made love constantly, or just held each other while they talked for hours
laughing, and eating too many pints of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.
Sarah had lived out her last months of life with
Charlie to the fullest. They filled all
those days with love and joy and instead of mourning the loss they honored a
happy life that had been well lived.
That’s how Sarah had wanted it to be so Charlie loved her and decided he
could mourn her later…Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05646511815728140305noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311193336852923058.post-7440968922724381102013-04-08T10:56:00.001-05:002013-04-08T10:56:39.710-05:00Greed
It is clear, at least to me, that greed is ruining society. It is the driving force in the world today. So many go without as few consume wealth at disgusting levels. I find it very disturbing but it just seems to be the way the world has become. I also feel it will be what ends it as well. Unless morality can one day defeat the monster and restore humanity and compassion before its too late.

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream. -- Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the first great authors I was ever introduced to as a child in school. He was the first author to ever resonate with me as well. His work felt alive in a way that no other writer that I had been exposed to ever had. His words were alive, they even seemed to breathe, they lept off the page and walked around the secret passages of your mind, and sometimes, even seemed to scream out loudly in fear.

I had been exposed to many of the classic poets and authors in that English textbook such as, Robert Frost, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, and many others but Edgar Allan Poe's work was noticeably different. In a way I never experienced again until I saw Hitchcock's 'Psycho', or first read 'Misery' by Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe's words worked his way into your very psyche. He clearly understood what fear was, what panic and insanity felt like, and how to instill those feelings into the reader through just his words.
While I do not claim to be a scholar of Poe's work, nor do I wish to write out his whole autobiography here, I did want to write a short tribute to him as an early inspiration of mine. Edgar Allen Poe was the first classic author I was exposed to in school that I felt spoke to me and excited me about writing. His stories, notably 'The Tell Tale Heart', 'The Raven, and 'The Pit And The Pendulum', were the first I'd ever read that had me in true suspense and the memory of reading those stories is still very much alive within me. To any one who hasn't at least sampled Poe's work, I highly recommend you do. You won't regret it.
